AIRLINES’ LAST RESOURCE TO STOP LOST BAGGAGE.

Luggage will soon know its destination and will warn its owner if someone tries to inspect what is not theirs.

In their efforts to automate and speed up boarding and flights even more, some European airlines will begin to offer digital tags, instead of the classic paper ones. These devices will be incorporated in airports at the end of the year and have the peculiarity that they will always remain attached to the bags and will be updated according to the passenger’s journey.

Thus, on trips with several stopovers, the user will be spared the cumbersome process of changing the tags necessary for the luggage to arrive correctly at the destination.

This is not a trivial matter, since in 2014 about 45 suitcases were lost every minute in airports around the world, according to a consultancy specialized in technology and communication.

In addition, work is being done on developing a device that will be placed inside bags and will allow travellers to know the status of their belongings at all times, as it will send them an alert if someone tries to open them when they are not nearby.

These initiatives aim to increase passenger peace of mind and luggage security and could translate into a reduction in costs and taxes. But as with everything, they have their downside, as their use could lead to cuts in airline and airport staff.
